A Pair of Cuba-Destined Aid Vessels Listed Missing subsequent to Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost sailing vessels transporting aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Military Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of nine sailors, according to a official statement.
The ships had been projected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
Background of Relief to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate navigational gear and communication devices," an official for the convoy said.
The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Previous Relief Shipment
Just days before, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had transported a significant amount of donated goods to the country.
That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, bikes and provisions.
Broader Political Context
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Foreign policy measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from several leaders highlighting the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to certain comments, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to locate the boats and guarantee the security of the people on board.
To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
