Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Shortly After Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share any more details on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming the president had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, implying that freezing the front line would merely represent a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader recently preceded speculation that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.

Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The talk about the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he added.
