Zak Crawley – 1

Expected for Australian conditions however recorded just a rare Ashes pair by an English top-order batsman facing only 11 balls.

Ben Duckett – 5

Got starts during each knock. His dismissal on Saturday was when things started to fall apart for the English side.

Pope – Six

Appears better due to technical tweaks. The first Test in the series is usually his strongest, then it goes downhill. England require him to build on this.

Root – One

Miles off that first hundred on Australian soil. The side need the wisdom from their star performer to have any chance to come back from this.

Brook – Five

His half-century in the first innings was skittish, yet important. Awful choice in the second innings.

Ben Stokes – 6

Came back after being injured with a five-wicket haul, though looked out of touch with the bat. Struggled while fielding against Head's aggressive batting.

Smith – 4

Could have the game for Australia, but needs to smarten up. Can expect a lot of bouncers going forward.

Gus Atkinson – 5

Part of the strong England first-innings bowling effort and tried to carry the fight while batting in the second innings. Among the bowlers that fell apart during the match.

Brydon Carse – 5

Similar to above, plus the spice of being dominated by Travis Head.

Jofra Archer – Five

Appeared awesome with the ball in the first innings and proved the top of a bad bunch in the second. Could still play a key role on the series.

Mark Wood – 5

Went wicketless, but massively commendable to just take part considering his time away.

Australian Team Individual Ratings

Weatherald – Six

Debutant had tough luck to be exposed against Archer in the first innings, later contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Usman Khawaja – Three

An unusual Test. Did not look fully fit and spent time off the field. Held on to a couple of key catches at slip, yet also looked immobile in the field. Gets a mark due to his injury which enabled Head to open.

Labuschagne – Seven

An effective comeback to the team. Absorbed the English pressure more effectively than most in the first innings, then backed up Travis Head in the second.

Smith – Five

Seemed out of sorts in the first innings. Unnecessary pre-match comments about Panesar.

Travis Head – Nine

Perhaps churlish to not award the full 10, but he played a pretty ropey stroke in the first innings. His follow-on century proved to be an all-time great performance.

Cameron Green – 5

Claimed the key dismissal of Pope in the first innings. Shaken by a Wood short ball during his innings. Hardly needed later in the match.

Carey – 5

Attempted a counter-attack versus England's bowlers on the first evening. Tidy with the gloves.

Starc – Nine

Shouldered the weight of the bowling in the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood with the first Australian Ashes 10-wicket haul for two decades.

Boland – Six

Below top form in the first innings. Got better in the second to trigger the English collapse.

Doggett – Six

Solid first appearance. Quite able stand-in for Cummins and Hazlewood.

Lyon – Two

Almost a spectator in a match controlled by fast bowling. Possibly suffered a knock when struck by Wood.
