Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to back former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent development, Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor stated.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would decline the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
