Global Fossil Fuel Consumption Reached Record Peak in 2024
Despite worldwide initiatives to shift to clean energy, coal consumption reached an all-time high in 2024, jeopardizing global efforts to curb climate change.

The share of coal in electricity generation declined as renewable energy expanded. But total electricity consumption rose, resulting in increased fossil fuel consumption worldwide, according to a latest climate action report.
“There’s no doubt that we are largely on the correct path. Our progress is too slow,” noted a research associate from a leading research institute. A particularly alarming discovery from our evaluation is that efforts to eliminate coal are well off track.”
Climate Goals and Obstacles
To reach net zero by 2050 and restrict global heating to 1.5°C compared to historical averages, more sectors must adopt electricity in place of oil, gas, or other fossil fuels.
But this strategy will only work if the world’s power grid transitions to clean sources. “The trouble is that a power system relying on fossil fuels has huge far-reaching consequences,” explained the specialist. The warning on this is crystal clear. We simply will not limit temperature increases to 1.5°C if fossil fuel consumption continues to rise.”
Government Policies and Global Developments
Although many countries have committed to reduce coal use following a 2021 agreement, certain countries are increasing production of the dirtiest energy source.
- India’s leader marked exceeding 1 billion tonnes of fossil fuel output this year.
- In the US, a former president has declared his support for coal and other fossil fuels.
Efforts to halt renewable energy projects and cut financial support for low-carbon power are yet to resulted in increased greenhouse gas emissions. However, the report suggested these measures could impact future emissions, although other nations might offset the impact by continuing to favor renewables.
Renewable Energy Expansion
The good news is that renewable energy generation has grown “exponentially”, with photovoltaic energy called “the fastest-growing energy source in recorded time.”
However this progress is insufficient: yearly expansion of solar and wind power must double for the globe to achieve the necessary emissions cuts by 2030.
“There’s no question that recent attacks on renewables complicate efforts for the world to keep the Paris agreement goal within reach,” said a senior research associate. “But the broader transition is much bigger than any one country, and momentum is building across markets and emerging economies, where clean energy has become the most affordable and dependable path to prosperity and power stability.”
Additional Environmental Issues
Globally is progressing inadequately on improving power conservation, especially in lowering greenhouse gases from residential and commercial heating.
Manufacturing pollution remain a concern: the iron and steel industry has been raising its emissions per unit – the CO2 generated per ton of metal produced – in spite of efforts in various nations to implement cleaner methods.
Mobility and Forest Loss
Electrifying road transport is advancing faster – over 20% of cars sold in 2024 were zero-emission. In China, the share was closer to half.
The report also emphasized concerns about the state of the planet’s natural carbon storage – woodlands, bogs, marshes, seas and additional ecosystems that store carbon. While countries have repeatedly pledged to safeguard woodlands, tree loss continues, though at a slower rate in certain regions.
- In 2024, more than 8 million acres of woodland were irreversibly destroyed.
- That is less than the high of nearly 11 million hectares recorded in 2017, but higher than the 7,800,000 hectares lost in 2021.
- Globally needs to move nine times faster to halt forest loss than governments are managing.
Forthcoming Global Meeting
World leaders and high-ranking officials will meet in Brazil soon for the Cop30 UN climate summit to discuss how to set the planet on a course to limit 1.5°C of temperature rise, as per the international accord.
Each government is expected to present a detailed country strategy on carbon reduction, known as a “nationally determined contribution.” But, it is evident that such strategies will be insufficient, so the crucial issue will be how countries respond.
