Meghan Markle has claimed that the Daily Mail breached "clear ethical boundaries" by reporting from the hospital room of her father, from whom she is estranged, after his claims that he had not received his daughter's communications.

An Open Plea and a Private Struggle

Thomas Markle publicly asked Meghan to see him in a recent newspaper interview, after undergoing major surgery in the Philippines.

Nonetheless, a spokesperson for Meghan said that she had been trying to contact her father and censured the publication's conduct.

"Considering a journalist from the outlet has stayed at her father’s side throughout, publicizing each exchange and crossing clear ethical boundaries, it has been extremely hard for the duchess to contact her father in private, despite her attempts over the past several days," the representative said. "Thanks to reliable and trusted associates, her message is now safely in his hands."

Publisher's Rebuttal

A representative for the publishing group of the newspapers rejected any ethical breach and said that Mr. Markle was a friend of the reporter who spoke with him.

"After Thomas Markle was fell ill in the Philippines he contacted the journalist and asked her travel to be with him," stated the spokesman. "Not only is she a journalist, she has been a friend to Mr Markle since 2018. She has been with Mr Markle in hospital every day, offering him care and support."

The company representative continued, "It is entirely untrue that each interaction has been publicized, and the suggestion that ethical boundaries were violated is patently untrue and vehemently denied."

A History of Strain

The row comes a tense few days in which Meghan is understood to have been trying to contact her father. Her representatives claim they had faced challenges to find him or establish a method to reach him directly.

Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018, when she married Prince Harry. Their relationship further deteriorated when a personal letter she wrote to him, extracts of which were printed in the Sunday paper, which she said "marked the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation."

Upcoming Legal Battle

This incident precedes by weeks the Duke of Sussex is due to begin a lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail over claims of illegal data collection.

In that trial, set for next month, the publisher is being taken to court by Prince Harry and several other high-profile individuals. The plaintiffs allege the newspaper group carried out unlawful activities. The publisher strongly disputes all accusations.
