Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
