That Grisly Animated Film Conclusion That Lingers Viewers
Among all the mature animated films I have personally viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the terror-laced conclusion of a graphically gory as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, bleak and frequently brutal universe that included a few small , forlorn twinges of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it came from an impulse to advance the medium even more, the filmmaker explained that it was actually a try to communicate a global, multicultural message concerning “the common origin of each battle.”
That idea is conveyed through a band of colorful pastel bears , obviously inspired by a popular line of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a culture focused on militarism and the defense industry, many of the bears are consumed by killing the mythical beasts, thanks to a holy book which states them they were once kings of the woodland, before the horned beings forced them out.
A few haven’t fully fallen for the propaganda, and prefer to sample drugs or mate outdoors.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these vivid animals show genitals and obvious urges.
For one particularly cruel, skeptical animal, Bluey, the war against the unicorns transforms into a route to control — and particularly to authority over his more tender, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor and a seeming sociopath , and as fear overcomes his squad and takes his comrades sequentially, he seizes more and more power for himself, through ever more bloody, damaging approaches.
At the same time, the unicorns are suffering their own horror, through a growing, deadly beast in their woods.
“Initially, it seems like a humorous movie,” the director said. “However it turns into a more intense and melancholic film. And ultimately, it’s a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the most whimsical movies by a legendary animator, that uncover a wicked pleasure in letting animated figures swear, engage in violence, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it evolves into more akin to a darker movie by that same artist, with increasingly visual gore and a tangible connection to the real tragedy of battle.
In the finale, it is an outright extreme drama bloodbath.
The terror that turns the film a perfect Halloween watch kicks in well before than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted gorehounds, for fans of extreme cinema who desire to see a film they haven’t ever viewed until now, and are able to withstand a plot which delivers no restraint.
Watch it with the lights off without any distractions, and that ending will dig under your skin and linger.
