The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
