The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
