The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
