Unbowed Nancy does not fear the sack but the Parkhead faithful display fury after derby defeat.
The Celtic boss insisted he had no concerns about losing his job, asserting, “I believe we are very near to changing our fortunes,” even after edging perilously close to the chopping block with a heavy loss to Rangers.
A Second-Half Collapse Results in Derby Defeat
The Hoops were in front Rangers at the break but a collapse after the break allowed the Gers to move level on points with the reigning Scottish Premiership champions. The former MLS manager, who was appointed from Columbus Crew, has now been in charge for six defeats in his first eight fixtures.
“There is unity with the board,” insisted the manager.
Questioned about whether he was concerned, the 48-year-old responded: “That’s not my focus. My focus is on working out methods to help my team to improve on the fine details.
Fan Fury Erupts
The fans voiced their fury – towards the dugout and directors – by gathering outside the stadium. The board are thought to be considering to return to the interim manager, who enjoyed a successful interim spell before Nancy was hired, should a change be made.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. However when I say this is the reality, that is not a sign that I am pessimistic. Absolutely not. My point is the turnaround is near, extremely close to turn things around.”
Focus on the Details
The coach highlights the fact Celtic can perform strongly for a half at a time. Indeed, were it not for wastefulness in front of goal they might have been more than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit except the fact that we didn't take our chances,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I must remain balanced.
“The level we had at certain moments was of top quality. This is the reality. I wouldn't speak so positively if it was untrue. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I said it's a repeating pattern. For that reason I believe we are really close to things turning around. Right now: small things.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, once more. However is sustaining it. My message would be different the same. Therefore I am convinced we will manage to turn things around.”
The Rangers Boss Outlook
Danny Röhl was cautious about a championship push despite what appeared to be a huge result. “We take it game by game, then we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The belief in the squad is outstanding.”
