US Has Offered a Decade and a Half of Security Guarantees, Says President Zelenskyy.

Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukraine's leader Zelenskyy has revealed that the US administration has proposed a proposed peace plan encompassing defense assurances for his nation covering a period of a decade and a half.

Details of the Proposal

The Ukrainian leader noted that in the course of significant talks with US President Donald Trump, he had sought long-term defense assurances for up to 50 years. Yet, the proposed framework envisions a reduced assurance of 15 years from the United States.

The specifics remain undefined what these assurances would entail, but the president has been advocating for "collective security assurances, inspired by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's key doctrine that an attack on one member should be seen as an act of war against every member.

Progress on Peace Talks

According to Zelenskyy, Washington's protection assurances for Ukraine under the updated settlement framework have been fully agreed upon, whereas Trump was more cautious, putting the figure at more like 95%.

The two presidents affirmed that advancements were achieved during the discussions in Mar-a-Lago. The US President, nevertheless, warned that there were several difficult remaining points, such as those related to land.

Prerequisites for Engagement

Separately, Zelenskyy stated to reporters that a meeting with Russia would be conceivable once the Washington and its European partners endorsed a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to bring hostilities to a close.

This comment comes following the US President stated publicly that he was of the opinion a three-way discussion between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen "at the right time".

Historical Context

The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have been without a summit since December 2019. The most recent talks, facilitated by the French and German heads of state, was intended to renew efforts to resolve the protracted hostilities.

Subsequently, in May 2025, the Russian president declined to attend talks in Turkey for negotiations with his Ukrainian counterpart, dismissing a bold proposal to engage in peace talks in Istanbul.

Unresolved Land Disputes

One major point of contention is the disposition of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Trump said that a plan to turn the area, which Russia largely controls, into a demilitarised zone continues to be a topic of debate.

The President went on to say that it will become clear in a matter of weeks if the conflict can be concluded.

The involved parties have emphasized that the protracted diplomatic process would persist as they strive for a lasting peace to the nearly four-year hostilities.
