Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
