Zohran Mamdani affirms he will reside in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
In his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his humble Astoria digs.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
